Reviews of Electric Pool Cleaners
How does an electric pool cleaner work?
Electric pool cleaners are automatic pool robots that take care of cleaning the bottom of our pool; they are completely autonomous and do not require our intervention once they are running.
Within the pool cleaner market, electric pool cleaners are undoubtedly one of the best options.
To collect dirt, they have their own bag or filter cartridge; the dirt is stored inside the robot, just like a conventional vacuum cleaner, and being independent from the pool's filtration system, it relieves our filter and filtration pump, extending the life of our purification system.
Furthermore, as we will see in detail later, the robot moves autonomously around our pool. This feature, combined with the possibility of weekly programming included in some models, makes electric pool cleaners the best ally for cleaning our pool.
It should be noted that these pool cleaning robots move along the pool floor, although some models can climb the walls and even clean up to the waterline. They will vacuum and filter impurities, and their brushes will scrub the walls to remove dirt.
Electric pool cleaners are very easy to install and use; they can be powered through the electrical grid or with their own batteries. Once connected, they do not require human intervention; they work alone, without needing the force of the circulation pump either.

Types of electric pool cleaners
There are many types of pool robots. There are different ranges, which can be divided into basic, classic, or high-end. The reason is that not all pools are the same, nor do we always want the same type of cleaning. Thus, we can differentiate pool cleaners by the type of cleaning they perform, the type of filter they include, or the type of power supply they require.
Pool cleaners by type of cleaning
One of the features that Outlet Pool customers usually consider most is the type of cleaning electric pool cleaners perform. Let's see the different types of cleaning a pool robot can do and which one interests us most.
Pool floor cleaning

If there is one function that absolutely all electric pool cleaners perform, it is cleaning the pool floor. We can say that this type of cleaning is basic and may be sufficient depending on the characteristics of our pool.
Any model we choose will cover the pool floor removing dirt.
Pool floor and wall cleaning

There are other, slightly more advanced models that are capable of climbing the pool walls by themselves. These types of electric pool cleaners have more power and a technical design that allows the device to climb without any external help.
It should be taken into account that for the cleaner to climb the walls properly, besides having more power and a specific design, the pool water must have appropriate pH parameters.
If the pH is low, algae can proliferate and make the cleaner's job much harder.
Pool floor, walls, and waterline cleaning
We will also find electric pool cleaners capable of cleaning the floor, walls, and waterline. To better understand, the waterline is the line where the water level ends. This line can get quite dirty due to the use of body creams, oils, or even the products we use to keep the pool water perfect for swimming. Thus, models capable of climbing the walls are often also able to clean this waterline. We can know the type of cleaning a pool cleaner is capable of by consulting the technical sheet of each model.
Residues will spoil the line and give a dirty appearance, even if the rest of the pool is clean.
Complex pool shapes

Cleaning rectangular pools is relatively simple, but often we encounter pools with complex shapes, round pools for example, or those with shapes different from conventional ones (kidney shape, star, etc.).
It should be noted that not all electric pool cleaners behave the same way in these cases. We should look for models suitable for complex shapes, regardless of whether we want them to clean the floor, walls, and waterline. Higher-end pool cleaners, for example, include dual traction motors. This allows them to rotate on themselves, giving much more manoeuvrability and greater pool coverage capacity, regardless of aspects such as shape or slope.
Pool cleaners by filter type
Another difference among electric pool cleaners is the type of filter. It is possible to acquire cleaners with bag filters or cartridge filters.
Pool cleaners with bag
Electric pool cleaners with bag filters have a higher dirt retention capacity. However, these filters require some handling when cleaning.
Capable of retaining the finest particles.

Cartridge pool cleaners
Pool cleaners with cartridge filters are easier to clean. The reason is that you only have to remove the cartridge from the cleaner and clean it with pressurised water until the dirt is removed.
The easiest to clean.

Pool cleaners by power supply type
As their name indicates, electric pool cleaners operate using an electrical power source. However, we can find two types of solutions: those connected to the electrical grid, or cleaners that include batteries.
Mains power supply
These are the best sellers.
These cleaners are connected to the mains and use it as a power source to operate.

It is important to check the distance between the electrical connection and the pool to choose a model with enough cable length.
Battery power supply
It is not always possible to connect an electric pool cleaner to the mains. For this reason, there are also models on the market that include rechargeable batteries.

These batteries provide total autonomy, making these models very interesting for pools where access to the mains is difficult or impossible.
Which electric pool cleaner do I need?
When buying an electric pool cleaner, besides considering the type of cleaning or filter, it is also necessary to focus on other key aspects related to the pool itself.
Pool size
One of the most important points when choosing an electric pool cleaner is the size of the pool. It is necessary to confirm its measurements, such as length, width, and depth, as well as the total surface area in m2.
Pool shape
The shape of the pool will also be decisive; we may find rectangular pools or oval, round, and even freeform pools. Keep in mind that freeform pools require more sophisticated electric pool cleaners. Cleaners capable of performing proper cleaning, avoiding leaving complicated areas uncleaned.
Pool materials
The material of the walls and floors is also relevant in the choice. It is important to identify the pool's lining well to choose between one model or another. For example, if the pool has a ceramic lining, brushes with greater grip and models with more traction will be needed, especially if we want the cleaner to climb the walls. If we look carefully at the technical sheets of each model, we can see if it is suitable for pools with mosaic tiles, PVC liner, polyester, painted concrete, etc.
Floor and edges
If the pool in question has a very steep slope, it will be essential to choose electric pool cleaner models with enough power to advance and overcome that incline. Also, when we talk about edges, we refer to the angle that joins the floor with the walls. Generally, edges with rounded angles are easier to clean with any model than those with a right angle. The latter require robots that can perform this task specifically.
Pool obstacles
Remote control
Some pools have obstacles, from steps to decorative elements inside. Obstacles can be a problem for the electric pool cleaner. However, besides finding models with enough traction to overcome them, there are also robots that include remote control. A remote control will allow us to guide the device at certain moments to overcome obstacles without the robot getting stuck.
Location
Another key aspect in choosing an electric pool cleaner is the location and environment where the pool is. There are areas where dirt will be much more abundant than others, especially pools surrounded by vegetation. The capacity of filters to retain dirt is measured by their porosity, which is expressed in microns. Filter porosity varies, and filters of different microns can be found. Observe the pool environment, noting if there are trees or plants nearby, as well as the size of debris that may usually fall into the pool, to choose a filter capable of retaining all the accumulated dirt.
Maintenance of electric pool cleaners
It is important to carefully read the manufacturer's manual of each electric pool cleaner to perform proper maintenance.
Each robot is different; however, there is something basic we must do periodically with all of them: clean the filter or cartridge. Also, it is important to avoid prolonged exposure to chemicals used in pools to regulate water condition.
This means it is advisable to remove the pool cleaner whenever it is not in use.
Comparison between electric and hydraulic pool cleaners
Although electric pool cleaners are an excellent option to keep the pool clean, they are not the only models sold.
At Outlet Pool, we also have hydraulic pool cleaners, which also give very good results. How to choose between one or the other? If the pool is small, a high-performance electric pool cleaner is not necessary. In fact, a hydraulic pool cleaner could be chosen without problems.
However, if the pool is large, it is always advisable to acquire an electric pool cleaner, as its cleaning is much more thorough.
Remember that hydraulic cleaners use the pump's filter to deposit dirt. If the pool is very large, we could overload it. Electric cleaners have their own filter. Based on this, pools with little dirt, those not in an environment with much vegetation or even in a sheltered space, can benefit from a hydraulic pool cleaner. On the other hand, if the pool has medium or high dirt levels, it is advisable to use an electric pool cleaner. Electric cleaners have greater autonomy. Many are programmable and can limit cleaning time or even the area to clean. Hydraulic cleaners are more economical, so if the budget is limited and the pool and environment are optimal, it is a recommended option.
